What Constitutes a True Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation that requires immediate attention to stop bleeding, alleviate severe pain, or save a tooth. At Altamar Dental Studio, we prioritize true emergencies and make every effort to see you the same day.

However, not every dental issue requires emergency treatment. Understanding the difference helps you get the right care at the right time—and helps us reserve emergency slots for patients who need them most urgently.

TRUE EMERGENCIES

CALL IMMEDIATELY

Severe Dental Pain

Intense, throbbing pain that interferes with daily activities or sleep, often indicating infection or abscess.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A permanent tooth that has been completely knocked out. Time is critical—we may be able to save it if seen within 1-2 hours.

Uncontrolled Bleeding

Bleeding that doesn't stop after 10-15 minutes of applied pressure, especially after trauma or extraction.

Facial Swelling

Significant swelling of the face, jaw, or neck, which may indicate serious infection requiring immediate treatment.

Dental Trauma

Fractured, cracked, or severely loosened teeth from an accident or injury.

Immediate Aesthetic Concerns

Front tooth damage before an important event (wedding, presentation, etc.) that significantly affects your appearance.

NOT TRUE EMERGENCIES

SCHEDULE A REGULAR APPOINTMENT

Minor Toothache

Mild sensitivity or discomfort that's manageable with over-the-counter pain medication.

Lost Filling or Crown

While it needs attention soon, it's not typically an emergency unless causing severe pain.

Small Chip

Minor chips that aren't causing pain or aren't in a visible location can be scheduled at your convenience.

Food Stuck Between Teeth

Unless causing severe pain, this can usually be resolved at home with floss or interdental brushes.

Dull Ache

Persistent but mild discomfort that's been present for days or weeks should be evaluated, but isn't an emergency.

Broken Orthodontic Appliance

While inconvenient, broken braces or retainers rarely require emergency treatment.

Emergency Services We Provide

Emergency Pain Relief

We'll identify the source of your pain and provide immediate relief, whether through medication, drainage of infection, or definitive treatment.

Emergency Extractions

When a tooth cannot be saved or is causing severe problems, we are highly proficient at gentle, efficient extractions. Our goal is always to save teeth when possible, but when extraction is necessary, we do it right.

Trauma Management

From knocked-out teeth to severe fractures, we handle dental trauma with speed and precision. The sooner you're seen, the better the outcome.

Infection Treatment

Dental abscesses and infections require immediate attention. We'll drain the infection, prescribe antibiotics if needed, and create a plan to address the underlying cause.

Emergency Restorations

Lost crowns, broken fillings, or fractured teeth can often be temporarily or permanently repaired the same day, restoring function and appearance.

Comprehensive Evaluation

Every emergency visit includes a thorough evaluation to identify the root cause of your problem. We don't just treat symptoms—we address the underlying issue to prevent future emergencies.
